The Journey of Life by Kristen - August 2026 Scholarship Essay

My name is Kristen Miller, and I am writing to express my sincere and heartfelt interest in being considered for your scholarship opportunity. As a single mother who has raised three incredible sons into strong, kind, and capable men, I now find myself at a turning point, a moment where I can finally focus on building a future of my own. After years of selfless dedication to my family, I am pursuing my dream of earning a degree in accounting and advancing my career in a field I have grown to truly love.

For much of my adult life, my energy was devoted to being the steady foundation my children could count on. I worked tirelessly, often putting my own aspirations on hold to ensure they had the stability, encouragement, and resources they needed to thrive. It was, without question, the most challenging and rewarding role I’ve ever had. Watching them grow into confident and successful young men has been my life’s greatest achievement. Now that my sons are grown and building their own lives, I’ve been gifted with an opportunity to reimagine mine. I currently work in an accounting role, where I have developed a strong foundation in the field and discovered a true passion for the work. I am eager to deepen my knowledge, earn my degree, and ultimately become a licensed accountant. This career path not only aligns with my skills and interests, but also offers long-term stability, growth, and the chance to make a meaningful contribution to the organizations I serve.

However, returning to school as an adult learner, especially as a single-income household, comes with significant financial challenges. Tuition, textbooks, and other educational costs can be overwhelming. Receiving this scholarship would provide more than just financial assistance; it would be a profound affirmation that hard work, perseverance, and lifelong learning truly matter, no matter your age or circumstances. It would allow me to continue my education with less financial strain and greater focus on academic success. Beyond personal achievement, this journey means so much more to me. I want to set an example—not just for my children, but for anyone who believes it might be too late to start over. I want to prove that growth and transformation are always possible. After breaking both of my knees in 2024, I had to rethink my career goals, and I have always been able to love numbers and accounting was my goal before kids, so I decided to go back to school and get my degree in accounting. I am committed to giving my absolute best, both in the classroom and in my future profession, and I hope to one day give back by supporting others who are also seeking to better themselves through education.

Thank you for considering my application, and for offering support to individuals who are working hard to build brighter futures. With your help, I can take the next critical step toward turning my professional goals into a reality, while continuing to honor the values of perseverance, integrity, and service that have guided me throughout my life.

With sincere gratitude,
Kristen Miller
