Practice makes better by Khamari - July 2025 Scholarship Essay

Growing up, being perfect was the one thing I wanted to do. Everything I did had so much effort and passion behind it that there was no chance of me ever letting myself down. After putting so much pressure on myself, my mental started to go down slowly. No matter what it was, it had to be perfect: making my bed, cooking, doing schoolwork, or even participating in the sport I love the most. Eventually, I had to learn that no amount of pressure I put on myself would ever get me to the stage of perfection I was striving so hard for. I had to take a step back and realize that I was only hurting myself with the amount of pressure and always getting disappointed. If there is a lesson I would like to share with my past self, it would be that nobody is perfect, and as long as there is improvement, you should be happy. While some pressure to be better is beneficial, recognizing that no one is ever going to be perfect can help alleviate some of it. Acknowledging that progress is useful is also a key part of this lesson. Taking small steps to gain a new skill or finally being able to do things better now than previously is extremely important. Not all results are instant, and usually, they are not. As long as you are able to see some progress within yourself, that should be enough to make you happy.
