Learning Through Feedback and Personal Growth by Kensley - August 2026 Scholarship Essay

One of the most important lessons I have learned is that feedback is not criticism meant to bring me down; it is an opportunity to improve and become a stronger version of myself. Throughout my leadership experiences, especially through DECA and mentoring, I have learned that accepting feedback with an open mind is necessary for growth.

As a student leader, I have often found myself in situations where I had to organize events, communicate with others, and make decisions that affected an entire group. When I first stepped into leadership roles, I believed that being a good leader meant having all the answers and making everything perfect. However, I learned that leadership is not about perfection; it is about being willing to listen, adapt, and continue improving.

One experience that shaped my approach to learning was receiving feedback after completing a project. I was proud of the work my team and I had accomplished, but I received suggestions about how I could improve my communication and involve others more in the process. At first, it was difficult to hear that something I had worked hard on still had areas that needed improvement. However, instead of becoming discouraged, I used the feedback as motivation to grow.

I began asking more questions, seeking advice from others, and creating more opportunities for collaboration. I learned that the best ideas do not always come from one person, and that listening to different perspectives leads to better results. This mindset helped me become a more effective leader in organizations such as DECA and in my mentoring efforts with younger students.

Feedback has also taught me the importance of humility. Growth requires recognizing that there is always something new to learn. Whether it is improving my communication skills, becoming more organized, or finding better ways to support others, I now view challenges and constructive criticism as tools that help me become better.

Moving forward, I will continue to use feedback as a guide for personal and academic growth. As I pursue my future goals in law and advocacy, I know that the ability to listen, learn, and adapt will be essential. Attorneys must be able to accept different viewpoints, evaluate their own actions, and constantly improve in order to serve others effectively.

Learning from feedback has transformed the way I approach challenges. Instead of seeing mistakes or suggestions as setbacks, I see them as opportunities to grow. This lesson has shaped me into a more confident, reflective, and determined individual who is always willing to learn and improve.
