My Goals for This School Year and What Keeps Me Going by Keiaria - August 2025 Scholarship Essay
This upcoming school year is important to me because now that I am a senior 1 nursing student, I’m so close to finishing this part of my journey. My biggest goal is to pass all my classes and clinicals while still taking care of my daughter and working full-time. I want to do well, not just to graduate, but so I know I’m ready to be the kind of nurse I want to be. That means being confident, skilled, and able to help kids and their families when they need it most.
One thing I want to focus on this year is getting better at the hands-on part of nursing. Reading textbooks and watching videos is one thing, but working in the hospital and helping patients is different. Because of what I went through with my daughter’s birth and hospital stay, I know how scary it can be for families. I want to be the nurse who understands that and treats patients with kindness and patience. I’m going to pay close attention in clinicals, ask lots of questions, and take every chance I get to learn.
School is tough, especially balancing it with being a mom and working. Sometimes it feels like there aren’t enough hours in the day. So another goal of mine is to get better at managing my time and staying organized. I want to stop stressing so much about juggling everything and make a schedule that works. That way, I can study smarter, not harder.
I also want to keep mentoring the newer nursing students. Helping them with tips and sharing what I’ve learned feels good, and it helps me stay motivated, too. Nursing school isn’t easy for anyone, and having someone to lean on makes a big difference. Being a mentor reminds me that we’re all in this together.
What keeps me going is my daughter. Seeing what she’s been through makes me want to be the nurse who fights for her patients the way I fight for her. I know what it feels like to be scared and not know what’s next. I want families to feel like someone’s got their back.
Also, I want to make a better life for both of us. Nursing will give me a steady career and more chances to support my family. It’s not just about me, it’s about showing my daughter that hard work pays off and that she can reach her goals too.
This year, I’m ready to work hard, learn everything I can, and get closer to becoming the nurse I’ve always wanted to be.
