The Hum of Patroclus by Kaylee - October 2025 Scholarship Essay
The book “The Song of Achilles” follows the story line of Patroclus, a fictional character, who narrates his life through his own perception of how the classic mythological Greek stories have unfolded. His story depicts how one can face many tragedies and yet still persist on, determined to live a life of value. While Patroclus experiences many encounters that develop his character and highlight his strength as an individual, his most impactful moment occurs when he joins battle to fight alongside the soldiers he has met by chance. Unable to convince the great Achilles, who is also his lover, to join the battle, he realizes that sacrificing himself will cause Achilles to seek revenge upon his death. Having no technical training in battle of his own, Patroclus exhibits bravery beyond compare to fight along strangers he has simply met along the path of life.
Patroclus’ story has taught me the value in standing up for what is right even when the consequences may scare you. His actions convey the idea that those is power should seek to use their leverage to uplift the voices of others even in times of hardship. Furthermore, the impression Patroclus leaves upon those who grieve him in his absence exacerbates what it means to live an impactful life. His actions and way of life exemplify what it means to love deeply, boldly, and passionately despite what those who disagree may say. While Patroclus is simply a fictional character, the spirit of his story resonates with real world action. As someone who is seeking to work in the sector of ocean policy, his bravery to fight for others is admirable and shows how you can work to amplify the voice of others and use your leadership to do what is right even in the wake of difficult decisions.
Actions regarding the use of ocean management and conservation effect all citizens of the world. There are many voices that might not make it to the table, but it is important to amplify those voices, thoughts and opinions if you have access to the table. Patroclus’ story conveys that we do not need to know individuals intimately to share in understanding their struggles and hardships, it is simply human nature to be empathic to those around you. However, what truly defines a hero is how they react to the empathy they feel. While many recall Achilles as a great Greek warrior, it is the actions of Patroclus that create the most impact in supporting the future and wellbeing of the common people.
