Healing Beyond What We Can See by Kayla - August 2026 Scholarship Essay

A time I had to learn from feedback was when I got comments on a paper that I thought was already good. I had worked hard on it, so at first I felt disappointed. But after I looked at the feedback more carefully, I realized it was not meant to hurt me. It was meant to help me improve.

The main advice I got was to explain my ideas more clearly and give better examples. I had written my thoughts, but some parts were too short or too general. My teacher also pointed out that I needed a stronger beginning and a better ending. At first, I wanted to ignore the comments because it was hard to see problems in my own work. Still, I decided to try again and fix the paper.

That experience changed how I learn. Before that, I used to think feedback was only about what I did wrong. Now I see it as a guide. It shows me what I am doing well and what I still need to work on. Since then, I pay more attention when someone gives me advice, whether it is from a teacher, classmate, or even from my own review of my work.

It also helped me grow as a person. I learned that being corrected does not mean I failed. It means I have a chance to do better. Feedback taught me to be more patient with myself and to keep improving step by step. Instead of feeling upset right away, I now ask myself, “What can I learn from this?” That small change has made a big difference in my schoolwork and confidence.

Overall, feedback has helped me become a better student and a stronger learner. It taught me that growth takes time and that mistakes can be useful. I still do not enjoy hearing criticism, but I understand its value. Because of feedback, I now try to stay open, keep learning, and use advice to become better than I was before.
