The Meaningful ways by Kayla - March 2026 Scholarship Essay

A few years ago, one of my classmates was struggling to keep up with her schoolwork after her father got sick. She often looked tired and quiet in class, and her grades began to drop. One day, I asked if she wanted me to help her review for an upcoming exam. At first, she hesitated—she didn’t want to be a burden—but eventually, she agreed.

We started studying together after school a few days a week. Sometimes we didn’t even talk about classwork; we just sat and let her talk about what she was going through. I realized that helping someone isn’t always about fixing their problem—it can simply be about listening and being present. After a few weeks, her confidence started to grow again. She began smiling more, and when we got our exam results back, she had improved a lot. Seeing her so proud made me feel something deeper than just happiness—it was a quiet sense of purpose.

From that experience, I learned that small acts of kindness can mean more than we realize. I used to think helping others had to be something big or dramatic, but now I understand that real impact comes from showing up when someone needs you. I also discovered how much I value empathy. Supporting her taught me patience, compassion, and how to step outside my own worries to truly see someone else.

Helping her didn’t just make a difference for her—it changed me, too. It reminded me of the kind of person I want to be: someone who listens, cares, and always tries to leave others a little better than I found them.
