A skill I hope to master in the next few years is to speak Spanish. My mom was adopted and we didn’t get to meet her biological family until I was 12 who are all Spanish-speakers and Mexican. I want to learn Spanish to have a deeper connection with my mom’s side of the family. As a junior in college, I am currently in a beginner's Spanish class and although I have been able to learn the vocabulary rules and some words I hope to be able to fluently speak Spanish in the next 5 years. Right now, to further my understanding of the language I am watching kids shows in Spanish and listening to Spanish music! Since I only speak English natively, I didn’t fully grasp how hard it is to learn a language until trying to learn Spanish now and so far, it has already taught me that people that know more than one language are incredibly smart! Through exposing myself to Spanish in different ways I am becoming more familiar with it. One thing I have learned so far is that in order to fully learn the language you really have to have the drive! It isn’t like other classes where you can cram before a test; it is one you must be interested in and be okay with making mistakes! Through an online platform Conversifi, I have been able to have full conversations with a real person completely in Spanish! I hope to use this platform more and just continue to expose myself to Spanish in every aspect to develop my Spanish in the next few years. Learning Spanish is more than a mere academic goal; it’s the commitment to move past vocabulary rules so I can finally speak the language of my family.
