The Revolutionary Pomodoro Method by Katelyn - September 2026 Scholarship Essay
I have always struggled to stay focused during study sessions or long classes, but when I heard of the Pomodoro technique, everything changed. Suddenly, studying for tests became productive and I was able to get more done. Before the Pomodoro method, I was dragging myself through long study sessions without breaks or motivation, but now doing my most difficult studying and homework is a breeze.
The Pomodoro study technique is characterized by 25 minute focus sessions, called pomodoros, that improve concentration and motivation. By focusing on a single task without interruption, the 25 minute period is perfect for both cramming for tests and doing routine homework assignments. In between each pomodoro, a 5 minute break prevents burnt out, and every 4 pomodoros, a longer 15-30 minute break restores focus for extended study sessions. This method also includes techniques such as combining smaller tasks into one pomodoro and eliminating distractions from the study environment.
What I love most about this study method is that it’s adaptable. If I’m completing a list of simple tasks or assignments, I can allot a pomodoro to each task on my list. With more complex activities, splitting up the work into smaller steps makes daunting projects seem more approachable. I can even shorten or lengthen each pomodoro to fix the time period I’m studying in. Using this technique, I was able to get a 5 on the AP Human Geography exam my freshman year. Since learning the pomodoro method, I have used it every time I sit down to do homework, study for tests, or review material. It has certainly revolutionized my high school experience and allowed me to perform at my peak academic level.
