Music has always been an integral part of my life, from playing the drums before I could walk to now creating my own tracks. I have experienced firsthand how music fosters discipline, creativity, and emotional intelligence. While pursuing a degree in chemical engineering, I've chosen to minor in music—not just because I love it, but because it teaches valuable skills that every student should have and enhances the skills they already possess. This is why I believe music should be a required subject in schools.

Numerous studies highlight the positive benefits of music on cognitive development at various ages. Learning and playing music in a structured environment, such as a school music class, can enhance memory and focus. It also aids in recognizing specific patterns that can be applied in other subjects or later in life. Recent research indicates that individuals involved in music tend to have higher retention rates in critical thinking subjects like English and math, often performing better on tests and exams.

For someone like me, who is pursuing a career in STEM, music can be particularly valuable. The skills developed through musical training can be beneficial for completing projects or tasks. Additionally, the rhythm and structure of music often mirror the logical thinking required in fields like chemical engineering, reinforcing the connection between music and a successful career in STEM.

Music serves as a healthy emotional outlet that can help reduce stress and anxiety. Engaging with music—whether by playing an instrument or simply listening—can aid in regulating emotions, promoting mindfulness, and creating an enjoyable jam session that alleviates the pressures of life and school. As I write this essay, I'm listening to music because it inspires my creativity and helps me formulate ideas.

Personally, I find that drumming or composing music boosts my confidence and allows me to release overwhelming emotions. When I feel overstimulated by my surroundings or various situations, I often turn on some jazz or listen to one of my favorite artists and just jam out. That's how powerful music is for me.

Music can also teach valuable social and collaborative skills. Participating in bands or ensembles fosters teamwork and helps students apply these skills to group projects or laboratory work, particularly in engineering. Through music, students learn to listen actively, respect the contributions of others, and work toward a common goal. These skills are applicable not only in engineering but across various careers, from accounting to construction. The ability to collaborate effectively benefits both those seeking collaboration and their collaborators. Personally, I can attest that my growth as a musician has been significantly influenced by socializing with fellow musicians and bands, which helped me gain recognition and support from others.

It is important to recognize that even though music is a required course in schools, not everyone is meant to become a musician. This is similar to how we require subjects like math and English; while they contribute to personal growth and understanding necessary for moving forward in life, not everyone will become a writer or a mathematician. Music can provide a more well-rounded educational experience by offering balance to a curriculum that is heavily focused on testing.

Music has not only made me a better musician but has also helped me grow as a scholar. It has enhanced my social skills, encouraged collaboration, and provided me with an emotional outlet during difficult times. I firmly believe that music should be a mandatory class in schools; however, that doesn’t mean every student needs to major in it. The true value of music lies in its ability to improve our thinking, foster connections, and allow for self-expression. Every student should have the opportunity to grow through music and discover new aspects of themselves along the way.
