Planning Ahead to Stay Ahead by Kalie - February 2026 Scholarship Essay
A small habit that has made a big difference in my academic and personal success is staying organized and managing my time with intention. I use a planner to write down my assignments, practice schedules, work hours, and personal responsibilities each week. This routine helps me stay focused and organized, especially when my schedule becomes busy. Taking time to plan allows me to stay on top of my responsibilities instead of feeling overwhelmed.
During high school, I served as co-captain of the cheer team, which taught me the importance of leadership, commitment, and time management. Balancing cheer practices, games, competitions, and leadership responsibilities alongside my schoolwork required strong organization. As co-captain, others depended on me to be prepared and reliable, which pushed me to manage my time more carefully. This experience helped me develop discipline and accountability that positively impacted both my academic and personal growth.
In addition to cheering, I earned my CNA license while still in high school. Managing challenging coursework, clinical hours, and extracurricular activities taught me how to break tasks into smaller steps and use my time efficiently. These habits helped reduce stress and improved my ability to meet deadlines consistently.
I am now continuing to participate on the cheer team in college, which makes time management even more important. Balancing college classes, cheer practices, work-study, and a part-time job requires careful planning. I am also responsible for paying my car payment and phone bill, which has taught me independence and responsibility at a young age. Staying organized allows me to succeed academically while remaining committed to my team.
Being raised by a single mother has influenced my strong work ethic and determination. As a first-generation college student pursuing a future in veterinary medicine, I understand the demands ahead and the importance of preparing now. Developing strong time management skills through academics, cheerleading, and work has given me confidence in my ability to handle challenges.
What started as a small habit, writing everything down and planning my time, has become one of my greatest strengths. It continues to help me balance leadership, academics, and personal responsibilities while working toward my goals.
