Overcoming Chemistry by Kalaiah - July 2026 Scholarship Essay
In 10th grade, I had to take chemistry for my science credit. Walking into chemistry I had no idea what I was doing, and that quickly became very overwhelming. We were learning so many new concepts and formulas everyday that I couldn't keep up. It also became very frustrating because one topic went off a topic we learned the previous day - so when I didn't understand the first topic, then had to move onto another topic that involves the first topic, I was constantly lost. As the semester went on, I learned that chemistry isn't just memorizing what was written on the board. It taught me to come up with strategies to help memorize and understand what was being taught to me. I had to slow down and analyze information, look at charts, make connections, and solve problems which was going to take time. Whenever I would be assigned a tough project or assignment I learned to ask questions and think about what was being asked of me from that assignment instead of giving up or immediately getting frustrated. Looking back I am grateful that chemistry challenged me because it helped me become a stronger student. Chemistry also taught me how to slow down, problem solve, take my time, and think about what is being asked of me so I can do my best work.
