The Hardest Advice to Hear by Joshua - August 2026 Scholarship Essay

One of the most valuable lessons I have learned came from feedback that was difficult to hear. During high school, several people close to me from family members to friends began pointing out that I was getting bigger. At first, I felt embarrassed and mostly dismissed the comments believing it wasn't that bad. It would have been easy to continue to ignore them. Instead, after some time I used their words as my fuel for my personal change. I knew what I wanted in life and it was to not be told that ever again so I worked towards that goal.

Over that summer I set a goal to become healthier and committed myself to following through. I established a consistent workout routine, improved my eating habits, and stayed disciplined even on days when I truly did not feel motivated. Progress was not immediate, and there were so many times where I felt tempted to stop, but I reminded myself why I had started and continued pushing forward.

By the end of the summer, I had made significant progress toward my fitness goals. More importantly, I had developed powerful habits that strengthened my discipline especially but also my confidence in myself. The experience taught me that meaningful growth often begins with accepting honest feedback, even when it is uncomfortable to hear. I also learned that feedback is only worthwhile if you are willing to act on it.

Since then, I have approached challenges with a more open mindset. In any part of my life I immediately take advice and start to adjust, I now see constructive criticism as an opportunity to improve rather than as a personal attack. That experience changed the way I learn and grow, reminding me that progress comes from being willing to listen, adapt, and stay committed to becoming a better version of myself.
