Mastering the Ultimate Comfort Food – A Good Soup by Joseph - April 2026 Scholarship Essay
There is something deceptively simple about a bowl of soup. On the surface, it’s liquid, simple ingredients like meats and veggies heated. But anyone who has ever choked down a bland, watery broth knows that simple does not mean easy or tasty. Over the next few years…or maybe my lifetime…a skill I am determined to master is the art of making delicious hearty soups. Soup is my ultimate comfort food.
Making soup is an honest form of cooking, that goes back likely to the beginning of time. I can imagine in the early years an outdoor fire, a crock of broth stewing, and the warmth it would provide before bed on a chilly night. Today, for me, it’s much the same. I enjoy ending a snowy day with a great bowl of soup, something that feels both nourishing and earned.
To get there, I’ll need more than to be able to just follow recipes. I started learning the basics a few years ago from my mom. She is a great cook and really instilled in me how to build in flavor with techniques like sauteing aromatics in real butter, seasoning without going crazy (except that one time when the lid fell off the salt and half the salt in the shaker fell in the pot– haha), balancing ingredients, and always tasting after each addition. Experimenting will definitely be part of my process.
Food brings people together and I want my soups to be something people look forward to. Something that makes a cold day better or turns an ordinary evening into something memorable.
Mastering soup may seem like a small goal, but it’s going to teach me patience, creativity, kitchen techniques, and hopefully one day I might even have a recipe worth sharing.
