Re-building my relationship with my Mother by Jordan - August 2026 Scholarship Essay

Growing up, my relationship with my Mother started to get worse. We started arguing more, bonding less, and getting angry with each other almost daily. And this was even more evident to others since I have a twin brother. They’ve noticed that my mom and my brother got along, so why didn't we do the same? I wondered the same because this wasn’t something I felt was intentional; it seemed to have just happened. So, we decided to get a family therapist.
The first couple of meetings were pretty nice, but afterwards I learned some of the actions I was doing that affected my mom mentally. It's never easy hearing things you do and how it affects the other person, but this was the best thing that I needed to hear because it allowed me to understand how my actions affected my relationship with my mother and how I could change. Our therapist walked us through multiple exercises and routines we could do to start working on our relationship.
That was almost 5 months ago, and my relationship with my mother has been great ever since. Sometimes as humans, we can be prideful and not want to listen to feedback, but listening to feedback can be one of the greatest things that we can do.
