Building a Community by Jordan - June 2026 Scholarship Essay
In today's world, a sense of community is more important than ever. There are so many people that have lost their connection to the people in their community. One way to reincorporate a sense of community would be to create a resale discount store. A resale store could transform a community by providing available goods, creating job opportunities, and reinvesting profits back into the community.
A local discount resale store could be the missing link with turning a city into a true community. By having a local resale store, the community would have access to necessary goods available to all. The store can offer many essential pre-used items that still have quality at a greatly reduced price. These items can be anything from clothes, kitchen supplies, decorations, sports equipment, to various household items. This accessibility is especially beneficial for low-income families, college students, and anyone looking for a good deal. Furthermore, by reusing old goods, it prevents the unnecessary waste of reusable resources that will fill landfills. Not only does a resale discount store allow access to goods to a wide range of people, but it also encourages a sustainable method for consumption.
By creating a discount store, employment opportunities arise. A resale store requires staff to sort donations, assist customers, and to maintain the store. These employment opportunities can be available for a more diverse range of people other than big companies. Those who struggle to acquire traditional employment will have an amazing opportunity to get back onto their feet and enter the work force. The resale store would teach many necessary skills, help prepare them for a long-term career, and allow them to achieve financial independence. This would decrease unemployment and give the community new job opportunities along with a direct connection to belonging to the community.
Through reusing old goods, the community reinvests into itself. It reduces waste, promotes self-sufficiency, and helps the community maintain economic value. The community can donate their pre-owned items knowing that their goods are going to make a difference to someone. Another way a local resale discount store can reinvest into the community is by taking some of the profits and donating them to local charities in the community. By donating and reinvesting back into the community, neighborhoods strengthen and the people come together working hand in hand to help each other in need.
Through the transformation of a community by providing available goods, creating jobs, and reinvesting profits locally, communities can be strengthened. The resale store gives the community the ability to get goods at a discounted price. By building the store, it allows people who are not in the work force a chance to obtain a job. The store would reinvest a portion of the profits back into the community, strengthening it and promoting growth. Creating a resale store in a community has many benefits to offer.
