Strategy’s that saved my high school years by Joell - September 2026 Scholarship Essay
So, I was never really the best at remembering information or retaining it. When it came to test day, my mind would always go blank when I saw the first question, so I knew something had to change. I started trying different study strategies. One of these was flashcards, which were actually really good, but they still gave me the same problem as normally trying to constantly read the same thing and hoping I’d remember it. What I came up with was grouping the most important things I needed to retain and associating them with information I already knew. So, if the quiz was on biology and how we produce energy, I liked to think about the gym and how we need electrolytes and proteins to help us through a workout. Just seeing something and being able to associate it with information from a topic I already knew was something that really helped me, and it’s a strategy I still use to this day.
So, that’s just one of the strategies that helps me, and I hope that maybe this could help anyone who happens to read this and has struggled with the same problems as me and even if it didn’t and you only take one thing away from this just know that if your willing to make an effort than it is possible to succeed.
