Solving Problems Beyond the Classroom by Jocelyn - June 2026 Scholarship Essay
If I could design a project to improve my community, I would create a free after-school tutoring and mentorship program for students who struggle academically. Many students are capable of succeeding, but they often lack access to extra help, resources, or someone who believes in them. I know how frustrating it can feel to face a difficult subject and wonder if you're smart enough to understand it. Sometimes, all it takes is one person willing to explain a concept differently or encourage you not to give up. My project would pair volunteer high school and college students with younger students who need academic support. The goal would not only be to improve grades but also to build confidence. Students would have access to tutoring, study workshops, and mentors who could help them navigate school, set goals, and prepare for college. I would focus on this project because education has the power to change lives. A student who gains confidence in the classroom today may become a teacher, engineer, nurse, or community leader tomorrow. By investing in students, we invest in the future of our entire community. The impact of this project would extend far beyond homework help. It would create a supportive environment where students feel valued, encouraged, and capable of achieving their goals. Every student deserves the opportunity to succeed, and I would want my project to help make that opportunity a reality.
