"What aspirations do you have for the upcoming school year and what motivates you to achieve them? " by jessica - August 2025 Scholarship Essay
This upcoming school year, my main aspiration is to succeed in my Fundamentals of Nursing course. It is one of the most important steppingstones on my path to becoming a nurse, and I want to build a strong academic and practical foundation. To reach this goal, I know I need to commit to proper time management, especially as the material becomes more complex and hands-on. I have developed a study method that works well for me: breaking material into manageable chunks, using active recall, and teaching concepts to others to reinforce my own understanding. My goal is not just to pass the class, but to truly absorb the knowledge so I can apply it in clinical settings and future coursework.
Beyond the classroom, I am setting the intention to build habits that set me up for success throughout nursing school. That means staying organized, asking for help when needed, and surrounding myself with others who are just as driven. I want to push myself to become more disciplined and resilient as I move through the challenges of this program.
What motivates me most is where this journey leads: I want to be a nurse who not only provides excellent care but also breaks down barriers that often prevent communities like mine from receiving it. Being a Spanish speaker and the daughter of immigrants, I have seen how language gaps, mistrust, and lack of culturally competent care can hurt health outcomes. I want to be a bridge, someone who brings empathy, understanding, and skill into every patient interaction.
Pursuing higher education is not just a personal dream; it’s a legacy. No one in my family has walked this path before, and I know that my success opens doors for others to follow. As the saying goes in Spanish, “Dime con quién andas y te diré quién eres.” “Tell me who you’re with and I’ll tell you who you are.” I have surrounded myself with people who aim higher, and they have inspired me to aim high as well. This year is about laying the groundwork for a career built on service, compassion, and lifelong learning.
