Computer Science by Jesse - May 2026 Scholarship Essay
There have been many challenges in my academic journey, but one stands out as particularly intimidating at first: taking AP Computer Science A without the recommended prerequisite. I remember feeling overwhelmed by the idea of jumping into a rigorous class without the foundational knowledge that most of my peers had. The prospect of keeping up with advanced concepts and complex coding assignments seemed daunting, and I questioned whether I would be able to succeed.
What changed was my approach to learning and my determination to overcome the initial fear. Instead of letting the challenge deter me, I decided to invest extra effort into mastering the material. I spent additional hours outside of class reviewing textbooks, watching instructional videos, and practicing coding problems. Recognizing that I couldn’t do it alone, I reached out to my teacher and scheduled meetings during free periods. These sessions allowed me to ask questions, clarify difficult concepts, and receive personalized guidance. My teacher’s encouragement and support made a significant difference, boosting my confidence and helping me stay on track.
I also found strength in collaborating with my peers. Forming study groups allowed us to tackle assignments together, share insights, and learn from one another’s mistakes. Through teamwork and persistence, what once felt intimidating gradually became manageable. Now, I look back at that challenge as a turning point. It taught me the value of seeking help, working hard, and believing in my ability to grow. Facing adversity head-on made me a more resilient student, and I am now better prepared to take on difficult tasks with confidence.
