Choosing Courage over doubt by Jehosheba - April 2026 Scholarship Essay
Becoming President of Choir was a big deal for me. I have been in choir since I was little and joined my high school choir in 9th grade. Every May, leadership auditions are held, and I had always dreamed of becoming president. I practiced for weeks and even created my resume to prepare.
The day before my interview, a classmate named Reina told me she was also auditioning. My heart dropped. Reina was known as the best singer in our class she always received solos, made All-State, and performed with her band at various events. Suddenly, I started doubting myself.
On the day of my interview, I chickened out.
Sometimes at night, I think back on countless opportunities I let pass me by because of self-doubt. That moment stands out the most. I was just as qualified as any other candidate, but I convinced myself I wasn’t good enough and that someone else would be better for the role.
Later, my choir sponsor approached me and asked why I did not interview. I told her the truth that I lacked confidence and believed the other candidate deserved it more. She surprised me by saying that if I had interviewed, the position would have been mine. She explained that she admired my humility and positive attitude and would have chosen me.
I will always remember a quote by William Shakespeare: “Our doubts are traitors, and make us lose the good we oft might win, by fearing to attempt.” This experience taught me how much self-doubt can hold me back from opportunities I am fully capable of earning.
A skill I now hope to master is emotional resilience, the ability to push past overthinking and self-doubt and take action with confidence. Developing this skill will help me throughout life by allowing me to try out for clubs, volunteer for community events, and interview for leadership roles or future jobs without holding myself back.
I am already beginning to build this skill by challenging myself to try new things, even when I feel nervous. For example, I recently joined a painting class that I once felt too shy to attend. Stepping into that environment was uncomfortable at first, but it quickly became refreshing, and I discovered a new hobby I now enjoy.
I am already beginning to build this skill by challenging myself to try new things, even when I feel nervous. One of the biggest examples of this growth is that I recently tried out for the soccer team. Instead of letting fear or self-doubt stop me like before, I decided to take a chance and push myself. Not only did I make the team, but I also grew quickly in confidence through practice, teamwork, and discipline. That experience showed me that when I choose to believe in myself, I am capable of more than I often think. Now, I am proud to say I serve as a captain for our varsity soccer team. Taking on this leadership role has strengthened my emotional resilience even more and taught me to lead with confidence, trust myself under pressure, and encourage others to do the same.
Each day, I feel my emotional resilience growing. I am starting to speak to more people, audition for opportunities I once avoided, and push myself beyond my comfort zone. Most importantly, I am learning to believe in myself and take chances instead of letting fear decide my future.
