Learning to Think Beyond The Answer by Jayla - July 2026 Scholarship Essay
One academic subject that challenged me more than any other was algebra. While I graduated high school with honors in 2024, that achievement did not come without struggles. Many people assume that students who earn good grades understand every subject easily, but that was not my experience. Algebra was the class that tested my patience, confidence, and determination more than any other. Looking back, however, I realize that algebra taught me far more than how to solve equations. It taught me how to think critically, solve problems, and trust myself when facing challenges.
I remember sitting in class and feeling completely overwhelmed when we began learning more complex algebraic concepts. While some students seemed to understand the material immediately, I would look at a problem and know where to start but then get stuck halfway through. It was frustrating because I was the type of student who always wanted to do well. When I didn't understand something right away, I felt as though I was failing.
One moment stands out in my mind. I had studied for an algebra test for several nights and felt prepared when I walked into class. When I received my grade back, it was much lower than I expected. I had worked so hard and still didn't get the results I wanted. That afternoon, I sat in my room staring at the test, wondering what I had done wrong. Instead of simply moving on, I decided to review every incorrect answer. As I looked through the problems, I realized that I wasn't making mistakes because I wasn't trying. I was making mistakes because I was relying on memorization instead of understanding the reasoning behind the math.
Around the same time, I was balancing several responsibilities outside of school. I also ran track and field, which had been a huge part of my life for years. Running taught me discipline and commitment, but it also required a significant amount of time and energy. In addition, I began working at Walmart during my junior year of high school. There were many days when I would attend school all day, go straight to work, and then come home to homework waiting for me. By the end of the night, I was exhausted.
I often completed algebra assignments at the kitchen table after work. There were nights when I was still trying to work through equations. Sometimes I wanted to give up and just accept that math wasn't my strongest subject. I kept reminding myself that growth happens when we push through difficult situations. I learned that algebra wasn't about memorizing formulas. It was about learning how to think logically and solve problems step by step. What surprised me most was how those skills began helping me outside of the classroom.
During my senior year, I suffered an injury that ended my track season. Losing the opportunity to compete during my final year was one of the most difficult experiences I had faced. Track had been a major part of my identity, and suddenly it was gone. Eventually, the same problem-solving mindset I developed through algebra helped me work through my disappointment. Just as I had learned to break difficult equations into smaller steps, I learned to tackle my personal challenges the same way. Instead of asking, "Why did this happen to me?" I started asking, "What can I do next?" That shift in thinking helped me focus on my academics, work responsibilities, and future goals.
After graduating with honors in 2024, I faced another challenge, which was figuring out what I wanted to do with my future. I was worried that I was behind or that I should already have all the answers. Once again, I found myself relying on the critical thinking skills I learned through algebra. Instead of panicking, I learned to gather information and trust that I would eventually find the right direction.
This summer, those lessons became even more meaningful when I enrolled in college algebra because I was nervous. Algebra had been the subject that challenged me the most in high school, and I worried I would face the same struggles all over again. At first, I felt intimidated, but something was different this time. I approached the course with confidence because I knew I had overcome difficulties before.
When I encountered challenging problems, I didn't immediately become frustrated. Instead, I broke them into smaller pieces and worked through them patiently. As the weeks passed, I realized how much I had grown. The student who once doubted herself in algebra had become someone capable of tackling college-level mathematics with confidence.
The greatest lesson I learned from algebra had nothing to do with numbers. It taught me that challenges are not signs of weakness but opportunities for growth. It showed me that success is not determined by how quickly you understand something but by your willingness to keep trying when things become difficult.
Algebra forced me out of my comfort zone and taught me how to think critically, solve problems, and persevere through obstacles. Those skills have helped me at work and in life. Most importantly, they have given me confidence in my ability to face future challenges. Through hard work and a willingness to learn from my mistakes, I discovered that difficult challenges often become our greatest teachers. That lesson is one I will carry with me throughout college and beyond.
