Overcoming the obstacle known as communication by Jayden - August 2026 Scholarship Essay

One time I had to learn from feedback was after my girlfriend and I had an argument. At first, I was focused on explaining my side of the situation and proving why I felt the way I did. I did not realize that while I was trying to get my point across, I was not really listening to what she was saying. Once we both had time to calm down, we talked about what happened and were honest with each other about how we felt.

During that conversation, I received feedback that made me realize that communication is not just about speaking; it is also about listening and understanding the other person. I learned that even when I do not agree with someone, I should still take the time to understand their perspective before reacting. I also realized that being wrong or making a mistake does not make me a worse person. Instead, admitting my mistakes gives me an opportunity to learn and improve.

What stood out to me most was that we were able to fix our disagreement by communicating instead of allowing the argument to create more problems. It showed me that difficult conversations can actually make relationships stronger when both people are willing to listen and make changes. I learned that feedback can sometimes be uncomfortable, especially when it points out something about yourself that you do not want to admit. However, being willing to accept that feedback can help you become more mature.

This experience changed the way I approach personal growth because I became more aware of how I respond to other people. Instead of immediately becoming defensive when someone gives me feedback, I try to think about whether there is something I can learn from what they are saying. I also try to communicate more clearly and give other people the same opportunity to express themselves.

Although the argument was not a positive experience at first, it taught me an important lesson about growth. I learned that improving myself means being willing to listen, accept responsibility, and change my behavior when necessary. Most importantly, I realized that feedback is not always meant to bring me down. Sometimes, it is exactly what I need to hear to become a better communicator, a better person, and someone who handles difficult situations with more maturity.
