JB's Introspection by Jaxson - January 2026 Scholarship Essay

For as long as I can remember, sports have been an integral part of my life. Whether it was grabbing rebounds as a center in recreational leagues or on the JV basketball team, kicking a soccer ball down the field during my elementary years, or checking opponents during lacrosse on my club or high school teams, I have always found energy and purpose in athletics. My passion extends beyond playing as I have developed an obsession with the stories, statistics, and legacies that define sports history and its overall culture. From debating NBA and NFL eras, to analyzing how players and teams have shaped their games, sports are a part of who I am.
But what truly increased my love for sports was not just the action, it was the broadcast piece. Throughout my sports journey, listening to commentators like Kevin Harlan and Mike Breen deliver hot takes, made every game come alive. Their voices turned iconic moments into memories, transforming even regular plays into unforgettable ones. And since I was not always able to attend games in person growing up, sports broadcasts became my own personal sports arena all from my own room.
In high school, I found a way to bring that same passion through my school’s own broadcasting hub, St Paul’s Sports Network or SPSN. Joining SPSN gave me the chance to step behind the microphone, share my knowledge, and represent my school community. Being a commentator feels completely different from playing or watching. On the field, I was nervous and focused; as a commentator, I feel calm, confident, and connected. When I am calling a game, I enter a zone where it is just me, my co-commentator, and the game in front of us.
Commentating has become more than an extracurricular, it is a part of my identity. I take pride in bringing energy, humor, and insight to each broadcast I commentate, especially basketball, the sport I know best. My goal is always to make listeners feel the same excitement I do, to turn a simple high school game into something memorable.
Through St. Paul’s Sport Network, I have learned that being involved in sports does not always mean being on the field. I realized early on that I was not destined for a professional playing career, but I found another way to stay close to the game I love. More importantly, commentating helped me start thinking about my future in a new way. I can inspire people with my voice. Working as a commentator has helped me to grow and develop, to step outside of my comfort zone. I also learned that it is okay to share my personality and passion with others. My dad always said that I seem nervous on the court. Working as a commentator has pushed me to overcome that anxiety. It is okay to be nervous, but I have found ways to channel the energy and let people see who I am.
I started at SPSN to try something new. What I found is that I can do hard things. I have long wanted to be a teacher, to help students realize their potential, but now I also see how sports media could allow me to educate, inspire and connect with people through a different platform. I have learned that it is ok to take a new path. It is important to not be stuck on one particular outcome and be ready to pivot when necessary. Time will tell what is next, but I am excited about the future.
