Learning through feedback:Turning Criticism into Growth by Jasmine - August 2026 Scholarship Essay
One of the most important lessons I have learned is that growth often begins when someone is willing to tell you what you can do better. Learning to accept feedback has not always been easy for me. Like many people, I have sometimes felt discouraged when I received criticism after putting a lot of time and effort into something. However, as I have continued my education and worked toward my goal of becoming a nurse, I have learned that constructive feedback is not a reflection of my worth or intelligence. Instead, it is an opportunity to improve.
As a nursing student, I have experienced situations where feedback showed me that simply working hard was not always enough. I needed to understand what I was doing well, recognize where I was struggling, and be willing to change my approach. There were times when I wanted to feel frustrated by a grade or correction, but I began asking myself a different question: “What can I learn from this?” That simple change in mindset made a significant difference in the way I approached school.
Instead of seeing mistakes as failures, I began seeing them as lessons. I started reviewing the areas where I needed improvement, asking questions when I did not understand something, and applying the feedback to future assignments and exams. I learned that asking for help does not mean that I am incapable. It means that I care enough about my education and my future patients to keep learning.
This experience has also shaped me personally. Balancing school, work, and being a mother has taught me that perseverance is not about being perfect. It is about continuing forward even when things become difficult. Feedback has helped me become more patient with myself and more willing to acknowledge the areas where I still have room to grow.
My goal of becoming a nurse is about more than earning a degree. I want to become a healthcare professional who is knowledgeable, compassionate, dependable, and always willing to learn. Nursing requires people who can listen, adapt, accept guidance, and recognize that there is always more to learn. The ability to receive feedback will help me become not only a better student, but also a better nurse.
Looking back, I am grateful for the moments when someone challenged me to improve, even when that feedback was difficult to hear. Those experiences taught me that feedback is not meant to tear us down; when given constructively, it can help us build a stronger version of ourselves. I now approach challenges with a growth mindset, knowing that mistakes are not the end of the journey. They are part of the journey.
Receiving feedback has taught me to listen, reflect, adjust, and keep going. Those lessons will continue to guide me throughout nursing school, my career, and my life. I may not know everything today, but I know that I am willing to learn and that willingness to grow is one of the greatest strengths I can carry into my future.
