A Lesson in Growth by Jamize - August 2026 Scholarship Essay

A time I had to learn from feedback was when I realized that improving myself meant I had to be willing to listen and make changes. Before, I would sometimes look at feedback as criticism, but over time I learned that feedback is actually one of the best ways to grow.
During school, I received feedback on my work that showed me I needed to put more effort into certain areas. I learned that completing an assignment was not always enough. I needed to focus more on the details, take my time, and find ways to improve the quality of my work. Instead of getting discouraged, I started using feedback as motivation to do better the next time.
That experience changed the way I approach learning because I no longer see mistakes as failures. I see them as opportunities to improve. I understand that everyone has areas where they can grow, and being able to accept advice from others is an important skill.
As a Communication major at Durham Technical Community College, I have learned that listening is just as important as speaking. Good communication requires being open to different ideas and understanding how to improve. The feedback I have received has helped me become more confident, responsible, and willing to challenge myself.
Moving forward, I plan to continue using feedback to help me reach my goals. Whether it is in school, my career, or everyday life, I know that growth comes from being open to learning and becoming better than I was before.
