1-0 Today! by Jamison - July 2016 Scholarship Essay
“Don’t worry about things you can’t control, work on the things you can control and move on there more things you can handle, just try it” -Adrian Rayshawn. Like this quote, I think that the most important lesson/motto I have learned from a teacher is to focus on being 1-0 every day.
For me, being 1-0 every day means that as a student athlete, son, and brother, I have to work as diligently as I can in order to be successful. This lesson is the foundation for which I base all my decisions upon. At the end of every day I ask myself, “Was I 1-0 today?” If the answer is yes, then I am that much closer to reaching my goal.
Throughout my three years of high school and even now I have utilized it on many levels and it works. For example, as a student athlete, balancing sports and academics can be quite challenging, but with proper time management and perseverance, I have continued to reach my goals. As a brother and the eldest son, I have three younger siblings that look to me for guidance. I not only have the job of being a positive role model, but I have to be a leader. As a leader and a role model, I strive to be 1-0. I put these words into action on a daily basis, not worrying about the obstacles that are ahead. As long as I do my best and prepare, I can surpass anything that stands before me.
“Being 1-0,” gives me the focus to turn my short term goals into long term goals. This motto has taught me that through hard work and continued effort I can reach all my goals by being 1-0.
