Trials and Tribulations by Jamel - September 2026 Scholarship Essay

Throughout my life, I have faced many trials and tribulations that have shaped me into the person I am today. From fifth grade through high school, I experienced challenges that tested my character. I dealt with moving back and forth between my parents, hearing negative comments about myself, feeling pressured into certain decisions, and losing my passion for something I once loved.

When I was ten years old, track became a major part of my life. At first, I loved the sport. It gave me joy. However, as time went on, someone in my life became so focused on my success that winning seemed to matter more than anything else. When I performed well, I would receive quick congratulations. When I performed poorly, I would hear long lectures about what I had done wrong. Eventually, the joy I once felt for the sport began to disappear.

At the same time, I was dealing with challenges when it came to my parents. My parents were never fond of each other after the divorce. They would always argue and try to take custody of the children they had. As a young child, it wasn’t difficult to understand everything, but it was a lot to take in. While custody decisions were in progress, I was trying to balance school and sports and not worry about the problems that were going on.

By the time I reached high school, I was tired. The pressure around track continued, and I felt as though nothing I did was ever good enough. Eventually, I quit for a few months because I had completely lost my passion for the sport. During that time, I learned how important it is to do something because you love it, not because others expect it from you.

One of the reasons I returned to track was because I loved my high school and wanted to stay there through graduation. At first, I came back because I felt I had to. However, as time passed, I feel God showed me the way and, I began to rediscover my passion. I started enjoying the sport again and I started training myself to improve. The most important thing was that I wanted to prove to myself that I could make a comeback which I was.

Through hard work I began to come u again and began hearing more encouragement from those around me. Yet the greatest achievement was not improving my performance. It was learning how to keep going when things became difficult. I learned that challenges do not define who I am; my response to them does.

My faith has also played an important role in helping me overcome those obstacles. I believe God allowed me to experience these trials and tribulations so that I could grow stronger, wiser, and more resilient.

As I prepare to enter college, I know there will be new obstacles ahead. However, the experiences I have already overcome have given me confidence that I can face whatever comes my way. With faith, determination, and the support of those around me, I know I can continue to grow and succeed. The trials and tribulations of my past have not held me back—they have prepared me for my future.
