My study and learning experience by Jahmir - September 2026 Scholarship Essay

Ever since I was a young man I had a hard time learning much of anything. Many people in my family thought I may have been different. Some thought I was possibly autistic or had ADHD. But even then my teachers saw my potential and never gave up on me. All of them noticed something my family did not. I only learn when I can see and experience it.

For further clarification and context repetition did not help me with things like math and science. Logic did. So when I can actually witness and experience situations involving such problems and equations I could learn it. For instance, how I learned cartography. My mother would give me things to draw with and tell me to imagine and draw what is around us as if we were birds. Only then did I finally grasp how to draw a map.

When I arrived in high school I struggled at first until I remembered these things. Once I could actually grasp the equation being used in a situation or circumstance I was able to learn. I am aware this just sounds like kinesthetic learning, but I feel that the description does not fully encompass the complexities of my mind. Flash cards for studying never did much for me. My style of learning and studying has always required that I grasp the concept entirely before attempting anything. For I struggle to learn pieces of things, I have to learn and comprehend it at its base value before I can implement it properly.

For example, as a boy I broke down math functions and equations then visualized them as a tree. This tree would then have many a different branch. This is how I rationalized and learned math for a long period of time. Even to this day. For the sake of my own education I had to do this. I had to understand math as all one piece of the same puzzle.

In conclusion, you can say I learn kinesthetically But from my own understanding I do not fit in that box. I have a unique way of learning and sadly for my educators it is hard to teach someone like me. But once I grasp something I never let go of it. Yes this may sound cliche, corny, and gauche but this is the only way I can make sense of my own mind. From the deepest pits of my heart I thank my educators and teachers for they have equipped me with the tools needed to also learn differently from what I am capable of and to go beyond myself and my limits.
