Small Changes, Big Impact by Jackson - February 2026 Scholarship Essay

A few months ago, I read the book, “Atomic Habits” by James Clear, which is the study of the impact of small habit changes. The book goes into great detail about the compounding effect of habits in your life. You can actually make big progress in an area, just by changing small things. So I started looking at my own habits and how I could remove some negative ones and add in a few good ones.

One habit that had a habit of being stressful and a distraction is with my phone. I had developed a habit of checking my phone in the morning just after getting up. It is really easy to get stressed when you see all of the news and stories that have come in overnight. It is easy to be reactive, rather than thoughtful. So I made it a point to stay off my phone in the morning. Honestly, I just feel more peaceful.

Then I decided to keep my phone in another room when I am focused and working on the ACT preparation or school work. This helps me to not notice texts or notifications that could derail my focus.

Lastly, I decided to add in the habit of reading at night before bed. I read one chapter of my favorite fiction book and one chapter of the bible every night before bed. It calms my mind and prepares me for a restful sleep.

As the book highlights, these little things add up to big changes! Habits are so much more important than we realize, and it truly does not take a lot of effort to steer yourself to better habits and choices.
