The Intricacies of the Human Body by Isabella - July 2026 Scholarship Essay

One academic topic that greatly challenged me at first but ultimately strengthened my critical thinking and academic learning skills was Anatomy and Physiology Honors. When I first got into this course, I was expecting it to be similar to all the other science classes I had taken before, where I was able to memorize the material quickly and learn the majority of the content within the classroom. However, within the first couple of classes, I was proven wrong and I soon realized it was time for me to take a different approach. Anatomy was not one of the classes where I could simply listen to the teacher’s lectures and absorb all the knowledge from within the classroom, it was one where I would have to take hours outside of the classroom studying on my own time in order to ensure I had a true understanding of all the material I was provided. In the class, we learned about the details and intricacies of various systems within the human body, many of which I originally had no idea were so complex. I learned about the various layers of skin, the different types of glial cells within the brain, the different chambers of the heart, and the nephrons within the kidneys. While the content for each system within the body seemed daunting at first, I realized that as long as I took the necessary time engaging with the material, I would be able to pass the tests and exams with flying colors. Throughout the course of the year, I created a system in order to help me learn so that I would not be overwhelmed with content the night before an exam. I studied the medical terms by creating digital flashcards that I would practice for days on end, I hand drew diagrams of various body parts and organs so that I could have a deeper understanding of them, and I re-did a plethora of old worksheets to ensure that I would have the knowledge that I knew my teacher would be looking for. Additionally, I annotated my old notes to add important information or to highlight key concepts which were beneficial for me to understand each system on a detailed level. After I started implementing my new study regime, I began to apply this knowledge to other classes such as AP Physics 1 and AP Psychology, which ultimately helped me in getting a 4 and a 5 on the AP exams respectively. Overall, taking the Anatomy and Physiology Honors course at my school was extremely beneficial in my academic journey and allowed me to better understand the intricacies of the human body.
