I remember my first job finally receiving my first paycheck expecting the amount of money to match the hours that I put in, but that was quickly shut down. Instead, when I opened the check I noticed that a lot of my earnings had been deducted before it even touched my bank account. Right there and then I understood that earning money and understanding money are two completely different things.
A lot of people really only care how much money they are making, how much money they are bringing in per month, how much money they are making per hour, or how many hours they are working. What they don’t realize is that paycheck knowledge can go far beyond just a salary number. I was not fully sure how paychecks worked. I did not know about taxes, and how savings worked and knowing the difference between it really helped. I also learned about how to manage my money responsibly now.
In the beginning I did not understand how a paycheck worked and it was a bit confusing. Instead of being happy with the money, I wanted to understand why the amount was different from what I expected. These experiences made me learn how taxes work.
Being able to learn all of this helped me track all of the expenses that I had and what I had to spend my money on, and when and where I was able to save money.
These learning experiences are what created my interest in accounting as a major. My academic goal is to get my master in accounting and get my Certified Public Accountant certification. Having the knowledge of individual earnings has shown me how important it is to one's financial responsibilities. This motivation has helped me have a career that assists others with their own financial decisions.
From what seemed confusing at first became one of the most valuable lessons I have learned. It has strengthened my critical thinking skills and taught me to ask questions and understand the reasons behind them. That experience not only changed the way I view money, but also has helped me shape the career path I want to pursue in accounting.
