Importance Of Adaptability While Helping Others by Isabella - March 2026 Scholarship Essay

Every year, my softball team hosts clinics where we teach the younger generation. As a team captain, I am one of the primary instructors interacting with the girls. My responsibilities include leading fielding and hitting drills, giving feedback, demonstrating techniques, and encouraging the players. In a sport where succeeding three out of ten times is considered great, I make a conscious effort to create an environment where players are unafraid to fail. It is impossible to learn and grow without struggling. I find it rewarding when the girls respond positively and begin to make adjustments in the right direction. If even one girl learns something new and improves, then the hours I put in are worth it. Softball has shaped who I have become and has given me numerous opportunities. Coaches and fellow teammates alike have spent countless hours helping me develop into the player I am today. I love being able to return the favor and serve as a role model for the next generation of players. Through these clinics, I can pass along the knowledge and lessons that were once taught to me. Softball continues to grow as a game because of the constant collaboration and sharing of ideas among players, coaches, and mentors. However, the younger players are not the only ones growing from these camps. Each time one of them asks me a difficult question or I must expand on a complex technique, I become a better teacher and communicator. The most challenging part of teaching someone new is finding a way to convey a message so they truly understand it. Wording that makes sense to me may go over someone else’s head, and vice versa. In the future, I hope to become a reconstructive plastic surgeon. As a surgeon, I will need to solve problems efficiently and work well with others. When someone’s life is in my hands, communication is of the utmost importance—one miscommunication could be debilitating or fatal. By learning different ways to communicate with others at softball clinics, I am preparing myself for a future filled with difficult conversations and critical decisions. In addition to being an instructor at softball camps, I tutor fellow classmates and actively seek opportunities to help those in need. Over Christmas break this year, I wrapped gifts for families in need. Having the opportunity to positively impact a family’s holiday experience made me appreciate simple privileges such as warm blankets and adequate clothing. When a windstorm blew down a tree that blocked the entrance to my neighborhood, I helped drag branches to the side of the road at 6 a.m. I am always looking for chances to help others and make their lives easier because I have been blessed in many ways. Each week, I tutor classmates in calculus for several hours, helping them work toward passing their class. Much like teaching softball, tutoring requires me to adapt my approach based on each student’s learning style. All of these experiences have taught me the importance of adaptability, a skill that will continue to guide me in the future.
