Daughter of Poseidon by Huyen - October 2025 Scholarship Essay

Like many students my age, I grew up reading Percy Jackson as a requirement for my summer reading. Unlike many characters I met, Percy Jackson felt the most real and relatable. He and I are both trying to figure out who we are in a world that has always not made sense. One of the most inspiring lessons I’ve learned from Percy is the value of embracing who you are, even when you feel like nothing is fitting into place.

In the story, Percy struggles in school and often feels misunderstood. Later, he learns that his ADHD and dyslexia are signs of his demigod identity. His journey showed me that what we see as flaws can actually be strengths in disguise. Like Percy, I had moments where I felt out of place or unsure about myself. However, seeing how he accepted his differences and used them to help others taught me that self-acceptance is one of the greatest forms of courage. Percy’s story reminds me that being perfect isn’t necessary. Sometimes life can get messy, and we might make mistakes or be unsure of what to do. However, if we are being true to who we are as a person, it’s okay that things might not make sense. Having confidence in yourself is what matters. That message has stuck with me throughout my own life, motivating me to appreciate my individuality and use it to make a positive impact on the people around me.
