The best skill for me. by Hayley - April 2026 Scholarship Essay

One skill I really want to get better at over the next few years is organization. It might not sound super exciting, but I’ve realized it actually affects everything, school, sports, free time, and even stress levels. As a high school senior getting ready for college, I know being organized is something I really need to work on now so I’m not struggling later.
Right now, I’ll be honest, I’m not always the most organized person. Sometimes I forget assignments, wait until the last minute, or have a messy backpack full of random papers. I usually get things done, but it’s not always in the easiest or least stressful way. I’ve learned that when I’m not organized, I end up feeling overwhelmed and rushed, especially when everything piles up at once.
That’s why I want to change that. I don’t just want to “get by” anymore, I want to actually feel in control of my time and my work. I feel like organization isn’t just about being neat, it’s about not constantly stressing over what I forgot to do or what’s due next. When everything is planned out, life just feels easier.
To start improving this, I plan on using a planner or calendar more consistently. Writing down assignments, tests, and important dates will help me actually see what I need to do instead of trying to remember everything in my head. I also want to get better at planning ahead instead of waiting until the last minute. Even just doing a little bit of work each day would make a big difference. I think if I build the habit of checking my planner every morning and night, it will slowly become second nature instead of something I forget to do.
Another thing I want to work on is my time management. I know I waste time sometimes without even realizing it, especially when I don’t have a set plan for the day. So I want to start setting aside specific times for homework, studying, and even relaxing. That way, I’m not cramming everything in at the last second. I also think breaking big assignments into smaller steps will help me not feel so overwhelmed when I look at a huge project.
I also want to keep my space more organized. When my desk, backpack, or notes are messy, it honestly makes it harder for me to focus. I think taking a few minutes each day to clean up and reset would help me stay more on track and not feel so scattered. Even something as simple as putting papers in the right folder right away instead of stuffing them in my backpack to never see them again could make a big difference.
I know this won’t be something I fix overnight. I’ll probably slip back into old habits sometimes, but I think the key is just staying consistent and trying to improve little by little. Even small changes can make a big difference over time. I also know I’ll have to hold myself accountable instead of relying on other people to remind me.
In the future, I know being organized will help me a lot in college and even after that. It will make it easier to handle responsibilities, stay on top of deadlines, and not feel so stressed all the time.
Overall, I really want to become someone who has control over their time instead of always feeling behind. If I can master organization, I know it will help me succeed in a lot more areas of my life.
