Learning to Embrace the Challenge by Hannah - July 2026 Scholarship Essay
When I first started taking organic chemistry, I quickly realized that it was unlike any class I had taken before. I was used to studying by memorizing information and applying what I learned to find an answer. Organic chemistry challenged that approach. The subject required me to think differently, recognize patterns, and understand why reactions occurred rather than simply memorizing steps. At first, I found it frustrating when I could not immediately figure out a problem.
Over time, I learned that struggling was part of the learning process. Instead of focusing only on getting the correct answer, I began asking myself why I was making certain choices and how I could approach problems differently. I spent more time practicing, drawing out structures, and working through mistakes. Slowly, I became more confident and realized that the process of problem-solving was just as important as the final answer.
This experience changed the way I approach challenges in other areas of my education. I became more comfortable with uncertainty and learned that complex problems often require patience, creativity, and persistence. These skills have been especially valuable in my behavioral neuroscience research, where questions do not always have simple answers and require careful analysis of evidence.
Organic chemistry also helped prepare me for my future career in genetic counseling. Genetic counselors must interpret complex scientific information while considering each patient’s unique circumstances and needs. Like organic chemistry, this field requires looking beyond the surface, asking thoughtful questions, and using critical thinking to guide decisions.
Although organic chemistry was one of the most challenging subjects I encountered, it became one of the most rewarding. It taught me that growth often comes from the moments when I feel uncertain or challenged. Instead of seeing difficult problems as obstacles, I now view them as opportunities to learn, adapt, and become a better thinker.
