Helping In A Meaningful Way by Hannah - March 2026 Scholarship Essay

I am the oldest of 4 children, and as such I have had many opportunities to help people especially my family. However, the moment that meant the most to me about what it means to really help someone came about 3 years ago.
Around 3 years ago my mother had an injury where she broke her neck. This injury required multiple surgeries throughout the year to try and help her. Even with the many surgeries, physical therapy, doctors visits and medications nothing was able to help the pain or fix the problem. Since those surgeries and medications my mother has become unable to walk for long periods of time, unable to lift anything more than 5 pounds and has had a significant time eating an functioning. From this experience I have had to step up and be a help to my family.
There have been many times that I have been asked to help and that I have seen a need in my family and have tried to fulfil it after this injury. One way is through helping around the house, my mother is a stay-at-home mom who did all the cooking, laundry, and grocery shopping. Since this injury has forced my mother not to be able to do those things in the way that she did before I have had the opportunity to take over. I now primarily do the cooking, laundry and grocery shopping in my family. I also drive my siblings to all of their extracurricular activities. I am the primary driver since my dad is at work for the majority of the day. As I have tried to do my part to help my family to the best of my ability I had an experience that helped me see that I was being helpful. I was talking to my mother one day and she was expressing to me how grateful she was for my help and that I have stepped up and have served the family.
After talking to my mom and seeing the impact that I have on my family I have seen that serving others in their times of need are very important. Being able to be in a position to help someone in a meaningful way taught me that I am more patient than I thought. I learned that I have more strength than I originally assumed I had and it has taught me how to be more loving and patient to those around me, especially my parents and siblings. Although this experience has been hard it has helped me and it has put me in a position to bless someone’s life, my mothers, in a meaningful way.
