Life matters , Knowledge is power by Haley - October 2026 Scholarship Essay
One academic project that really sparked my curiosity was a research project I did about why schools should teach more real life skills. I started thinking about how students spend years in school learning different subjects taking tests and completing assignments, but many still graduate without knowing how to manage money, apply for jobs handle stress or make important decisions. This made me wonder why schools do not spend more time preparing students for life outside the classroom.
As a college student majoring in Business Finance, this topic became even more interesting to me because I want to understand how money works and how people can make better financial decisions. I realized that learning about finance is important but not everyone gets the same opportunity to learn these skills. Some students grow up learning about saving, budgeting, and credit from their families, while others have to figure everything out on their own. I started asking myself how much easier life could be if everyone learned these things in school.
While working on my research I explored the idea of adding practical lessons about financial literacy, emotional management, job preparation, and decision making to the school curriculum. I also thought about how schools focus so much on grades and standardized tests that students may not always get the chance to learn skills they will actually use every day. This helped me understand that education should be about more than passing classes. It should also prepare students to become independent and responsible adults.
What I found most interesting was how something that seemed like a simple problem could have a bigger impact on people’s futures. Not knowing how to manage money or make important decisions can create challenges that follow people into adulthood. I began to see how education can affect someone’s confidence, opportunities, and ability to reach their goals. This project taught me to look beyond what I already know and ask questions about things people often accept as normal. It also helped me improve my research skills, think more critically, and understand that there can be different sides to an issue. Most importantly, it showed me that research is not just about finding information for an assignment. It can help us recognize problems and think of ways to make things better.
In the future, I want to use what I learn in college to build a successful career in finance and business. This project reminded me that knowledge is most valuable when we can apply it to real life. It also encouraged me to keep asking questions, learning new things, and looking for ways to make a positive difference in my community.
