The Physics of Perseverance by Haleema - July 2026 Scholarship Essay

One academic subject that challenged me at first but ultimately strengthened my critical thinking skills was physics. When I first started learning physics, I found it difficult because it required a different way of thinking than I was used to. Instead of simply memorizing information, I had to understand why things happened and apply concepts to new situations. Physics challenged me to look beyond the surface and think more deeply about the world around me.

One of the biggest challenges I faced in physics was learning how to solve complex problems. At first, I would focus on finding the correct formula and plugging in numbers, but I quickly realized that physics required much more than that. I had to understand the relationships between different variables, analyze the information given, and determine the best approach before solving a problem. This process was frustrating at times, but it taught me the importance of patience and persistence.

As I continued studying physics, I developed stronger problem-solving skills. I learned to break down difficult questions into smaller steps and look for patterns that could guide me toward a solution. Instead of giving up immediately as I did in the beginning, I began asking questions, reviewing mistakes, and using them as opportunities to improve. This change in mindset helped me become a more confident and independent learner.

Physics also strengthened my ability to think critically by teaching me to connect concepts to real-world situations. Learning about forces, motion, energy, and systems showed me how science explains many things we experience every day. It also helped me recognize the importance of applying logical reasoning, a skill that will be valuable in my future career in the medical field.

Whether I am preparing for exams, volunteering in healthcare, or working toward my future goals, I have learned that difficult problems can be solved through curiosity, determination, and careful thinking. Physics taught me that growth often comes from stepping outside my comfort zone and being willing to learn from challenges.

Although physics was not an easy subject at first, it became one of the subjects that helped me grow the most. It taught me to consider different perspectives, think of different solutions, and not give up. These skills will continue to guide me as I pursue higher education and my goal of working in medicine.
