From a Challenge to a Strength by Hailey - July 2026 Scholarship Essay

One academic topic that challenged me initially was Human Geography. Human Geography is the study of how human cultures, communities, and politics interact with their physical environments. Before going into one of my classes to learn about it, I was expecting that all I had to do was memorize terms and the countries on a map. I quickly realized it’s a lot more than that. Human Geography is not as simple as it sounds; it actually requires a lot of complex thinking. You have to properly understand the relationships of people in various ways and pay attention to detail when it comes to physical maps. One of the most interesting things I learned from my Human Geography class was the differences between maps and how each one is unique in its own way. It was cool to learn how all of these maps were used for similar purposes, but drawn in different ways.
This class made me think deeply about the causes and results of certain events such as migration, population changes, and urbanization. For example, instead of just seeing how a population goes up or down, I started to think about why a certain area gained or lost more people than it had originally. This could have been for a number of reasons, such as pull or push factors, suburbanization, gentrification, and many more. I realized how much reasoning exists in our everyday lives and how it affects us. Human Geography was one of the most valuable classes that I’ve taken. Critical thinking is such an important aspect for looking beyond surface-level understanding. I’ve developed new skills that will for sure be of use to me in the future. These skills have prepared me to explore learning opportunities with more curiosity.
