Last summer, I was chosen for Penn State’s Business Summer Opportunities Session (BOSS). I led a team of five in developing an application that utilizes AI algorithms to simplify the housing and roommate search for college students.

The week leading up to our final pitch, the entire team felt nervous. However, two of my teammates from Puerto Rico were especially tense. Although they spoke conversational English very well, they had yet to give a professional presentation in English, let alone in front of judges with prizes at stake. In remediating their anxiety, they relied on me for confidence and guidance. Two hours of daily script memorization left our dorm’s common room filled with flashcards and colorful markers for color-coding. I leveraged my debate experience to break down pronunciation and write clear scripts. After assisting them as a teammate throughout our presentation rehearsals, I played the role of a judge and asked them tough questions.

As we presented our business pitch to a panel of four investors, I was warmed by hearing their relaxed speaking tone and steady pace, which we built through long nights of practice. Seeing my teammates’ satisfaction and relief towards their own performance filled me with more pride than the third-place gift card prizes we boasted. From this experience, I learned that leadership thrives on motivation and encouragement. By believing in others even when they hesitate, and giving them the tools and encouragement to surprise themselves, I help turn fear into triumph.
