In the Moment, I Learned to Advocate by Gracelynn - January 2026 Scholarship Essay

I discovered a new strength in myself while volunteering at Chautauqua Charter School during a moment that required me to advocate for a student who was experiencing an outburst related to autism. The situation unfolded quickly, and while the student was overwhelmed, those around him did not fully understand what was happening. What began as a moment of distress became a turning point for me, revealing my ability to remain calm, advocate effectively, and protect the dignity of someone who could not advocate for himself.
The student became overstimulated and visibly upset, and his reaction immediately drew attention from classmates and adults who were unsure how to respond. Some viewed the behavior as disruptive rather than as a response to sensory overload. Recognizing this misunderstanding, I felt a responsibility to intervene, not only to help the student regulate his emotions, but also to ensure he was treated with patience and compassion rather than judgment.
I approached the student calmly, using a steady voice and minimal language to reduce stimulation. At the same time, I quietly communicated to those nearby that the student was overwhelmed and needed space rather than correction. By advocating for his needs, I helped shift the focus from discipline to understanding. As I supported the student through breathing techniques and allowed him time to regain control, the classroom atmosphere gradually stabilized. The student calmed down, and the other students were able to remain engaged without escalating the situation.
This moment revealed a strength I had not fully recognized in myself, the ability to advocate for others in moments of vulnerability. Remaining composed while explaining the situation to others required confidence, empathy, and emotional awareness. I realized that advocacy is not always loud or confrontational; often, it is quiet, intentional, and rooted in understanding. Protecting this student’s dignity while addressing the concerns of the classroom showed me that I could balance compassion with responsibility.
The experience deeply influenced my personal and professional growth. It reinforced my desire to pursue social work and confirmed that advocacy is at the core of who I am and who I aspire to be. I gained firsthand insight into how easily individuals with disabilities can be misunderstood and how essential it is for someone to speak on their behalf. This moment strengthened my commitment to learning trauma-informed and inclusive practices that honor individual needs.
Volunteering at Chat Aqua Charter School helped me understand that growth often comes from moments that require courage and empathy. Advocating for that student did more than resolve a single situation, it clarified my purpose. It showed me that I have the strength to stand up for others, create understanding in moments of confusion, and contribute to environments that are supportive rather than judgmental. That realization continues to guide my academic journey and affirms my path toward a career in social work
