Reconnecting Our Roots by Grace - June 2026 Scholarship Essay

As I look out across the courtyard during lunch, I see hundreds of peers huddled over glowing screens, completely silent. We are physically together but isolated in digital worlds. As a graduating senior, I have spent the last four years watching our campus community lose its vital spark to online platforms. If I could design a project to transform our school community, I would create a campus initiative focused entirely on offline engagement and peer mentorship.
This project would establish regular courtyard gatherings, hands on workshops, and intergenerational hobby circles that require zero technology. Students would lead interactive sessions sharing tangible skills like basic car maintenance, canvas painting, gardening, or acoustic music. We would build physical bulletin boards around campus for announcements, trading cards, and club sign ups, replacing the school app forums that alienate many students.
The choice to avoid social media for this project is entirely intentional. True connection happens when we look into a person eyes, hear their laugh, and collaborate on real world tasks. Relying on digital apps to promote community only feeds the cycle of screen dependence. By using physical flyers and word of mouth, we encourage students to step out of their comfort zones and talk face to face.
This effort will significantly reduce campus loneliness. It will give students a safe space to lower their guards, discover shared real world interests, and realize they are valued for who they are, not for their online presence. We can rebuild a vibrant, deeply connected community by looking up from our screens and engaging with the world right in front of us.
