The Lake Rescue by George - March 2026 Scholarship Essay
I never thought a normal summer day would turn into something I’d remember forever. My brothers and I were just at a friend’s house when we saw a cool tiki boat on the lake. My brother noticed the boat was stuck and that they really needed help. We asked to use our friend’s canoe, and we paddled out as fast as we could. The sun was hot that day, but we kept going.
When we finally reached the boat, we found several women on board who were stranded. I could see their relief when we pulled out canoe next to their tiki boat. They told us that they were stuck and didn’t know what to do. They had called the police, but the officers couldn’t help because they didn’t have a boat on the lake. They called their husbands, but their husbands didn’t know anyone nearby. They even called the place where they rented the tiki boat, but they couldn’t help either. The tiki boat was the only boat allowed to have a motor on the entire lake, so there was no one boating nearby to help. The ladies were afraid they would have swim to shore and the lake was full of seaweed, mud, and the worse part - snapping turtles.
Thankfully, we saw them and came to help. My brother and I used our canoe to bring the ladies in one by one. Getting everyone safely back wasn’t easy. It took time and work, but it was worth it. I learned that it is important to be paying attention to what is happening around you and to jump in to help when you are needed. That day taught me to be courageous, to take responsibility, and the importance of teamwork. It showed me that no matter what age you are, you can make a real difference. I’ll never forget how happy the ladies were when we got them back to land safely, and I’ll never forget the feeling of knowing I did the right thing.
