Overcoming A Challenge by Gabriel - May 2026 Scholarship Essay
The most significant challenge I faced was transitioning from virtual learning at public school to a rigorous private school. My middle school experience was mostly virtual due to the pandemic, so my academic progress was hindered over those years. Virtual learning allowed some of my teachers to teach haphazardly from their cars or while checking out groceries at a gas station. I took advantage of every resource I was given, but they were few and far between. Despite these hardships, I consistently earned straight As and was among the top students in my class upon graduating from middle school.
I was accepted into Lovett with the help of A Better Chance, and Lovett awarded me a need-based scholarship intended to recruit minorities from public schools. For context, A Better Chance is an organization that provides admissions assistance and financial aid advocacy to students of color transitioning from middle school to high school. The Lovett School is a predominantly white institution with a 25% acceptance rate. Lovett’s annual tuition is $40,000, but my parents are only required to pay $10,000 thanks to their aforementioned financial aid advocacy. This is because my father’s (our primary source of income) employment status shifted from a stable job with a nonprofit organization to sporadic consulting engagements.
Achieving such a thorough and rigorous education at a college-prep private school would not have been so feasible for me without the aforementioned financial aid, and I am very thankful that I received it. Earning this scholarship will help continue this trend; all of my college options cost $50,000 per year, while we can only afford $27,000. For me to achieve an education that challenges me academically and provides a thorough education, this scholarship is crucial.
Unlike my previous school, Lovett did not resort to virtual learning and had a far more rigorous curriculum. I knew I was not prepared for the challenges ahead, so I decided to take a summer course at Lovett to help me adjust. This course introduced me to Lovett's style of coursework and pushed me to work and study at the level expected of me throughout my high school career.
My freshman-year grades do not accurately reflect my abilities because of external factors, such as adapting to Lovett’s unique system, which my peers had already been familiar with for years. Every single semester at Lovett, I have shown improvement, climbing from several Bs in my Freshman year to making the Scholar's List (93+ average) in my Sophomore year and the Principal's List (95+ average) in my Junior and Senior years. I may have started from the bottom, but I have been climbing hard and fast since arriving at Lovett.
Once I graduate from high school, I intend to study Communications and Journalism throughout my higher education, and this dream will be a reality with the help of this scholarship.
