Why I Chose Nursing by Erica - August 2025 Scholarship Essay

My biggest goal is to earn a BS in Nursing and become a first-generation college graduate. I've been preparing to work in the medical field since I was a child. I want to learn to care for people. My passion for caring for others didn’t start as a dream. It began as a necessity.

I’ve been caring for my mother for as long as I can remember. Throughout my life, I learned to be vigilant, precise, and adaptable. Problem-solving became second nature when I had to make split-second decisions on account of my mother’s condition. As I grew older, my curiosity grew with me. My mother suffered from grand mal seizures, which terrified me as a child. Instead of letting fear drive me I started asking questions. I started researching on my own because I wanted to be more helpful. I realized that learning about health and healing was a way I could make life better, not only for her but for anyone who needed my knowledge.

Everyone deserves access to reliable healthcare. My mission is to provide help to anyone who might need it. This year my focus is on excelling in my classes, applying to colleges, and seeking opportunites to explore the medical field. Each of these steps are helping me to achieve my main goal of becoming a nurse. I’m a responsible student, and I'm confident I will complete my goals.
