The Road Less Traveled by Emma - January 2026 Scholarship Essay
My first years out of high school were rough. Intimidated by the immense amount of decisions I had to make, and feeling like I had to depict my future off of the approval of others. Like any student after graduating, I chose to go to ASU because it seemed like the right thing to do. It was what everyone else was doing so it must be the path for me, right? Well after one grueling semester, and a lot of very expensive decisions, I realized I needed to build the strength and the courage to disregard the judgment of others, and pursue my passion. Sports Training.
After what I thought was my biggest weakness, feeling lost to the world, I realized being different and choosing the road less traveled would turn into my greatest strength. Coming to the conclusion that I needed to do what would fill my cup regardless of the personal beliefs of others was a major pivot point in my life. I decided to go back to school to study Sports Science and Performance Programming. At first, I was terrified. Not only was this path intimidating, but the lack of female presence gave me even more resistance. However, I took the feeling of intimidation and turned it to excitement. I could really have the chance to make an impact in this industry.
Making this decision has become my greatest strength, allowing me to grow in ways I never had imagined possible. This decision required me to take risks, embrace uncertainty, and develop a relentless drive and pursuit. I choose to use this opportunity to become inspired, and develop unwavering persistence, making an impact on others, and paving the way for other girls too afraid to take that leap.
