A challenging academic topic for me was human anatomy. As a kinesiology student, I realized that knowing human anatomy would be essential for my future work; however, I did not realize the subject would be so complex. Memorizing muscles, nerves, bones, and psychological processes proved difficult enough, but to comprehend the interactions among all the body's systems, I needed a new approach. What initially appeared to be ht emost challenging class so far in my academic career turned out to be a valuable experience.
I began the class with my usual approach of trying to memorize information. I quickly realized that this strategy was not going to work anymore. Rather than just remembering the details, I needed to analyze relationships and patterns and figure out how each part of the body is affected by the others.
Instead of becoming discouraged, I took a different approach to studying. I made diagrams for myself, talked myself through explanations, and quizzed myself. I also tied each lesson to motion and sports performance; instead of asking myself, “What is this muscle called?” I asked myself, “What role does this muscle play in motion, and what would happen if I were to injure it?” This new approach made studying easier and made more sense for me.
This change was very helpful in improving my ability to think critically outside the scope of class. I was able to dissect it into different parts and understand how various systems operate and how one system affects another. Instead of trying to find the answer right away, I focused on assessing the information from multiple angles before arriving at an answer.
Most importantly, overcoming this challenge helped me understand why I picked kinesiology. I wish to establish a career where I can help individuals who have sustained injuries regain their ability to do what they enjoy. Gaining in-depth knowledge of anatomy has equipped me to fulfill that dream. It has helped me realize that growth is often achieved through tackling difficult subjects. By developing critical-thinking skills rather than just memorizing material, I became a more efficient learner.
