The adventures of Percy Jackson by Ella - October 2025 Scholarship Essay

Growing up, I met many different book characters. The one that had the biggest impact was Percy Jackson from Rick Riordan's Percy Jackson and the Olympians. Percy Jackson was a student who struggled academically. He had dyslexia and ADHD and struggled with making friends. I had a similar problem. School was difficult because I could not focus, and my friends were next to nonexistent. Percy Jackson helped me get through that rough time. He taught me how to stand up for myself. What people call handicaps became my strengths.
Percy went through a series of intense situations, such as arguing with the god of the underworld, then fighting the god of war, to name a few. While the adventures as fantastical and impossible, I still found courage through them. He faces them with the determination of a lion and the drama of a princess. He constantly stands up to the gods, showing them that he and other gods can’t walk all over their children.
Percy Jackson taught me that friends come from trust. You can’t be friends with someone you don’t trust. That is a lesson I’ve carried throughout my life. Standing up for yourself shows others that you can be trusted. Percy never let anyone change him into something he’s not. And I strive to be like that. I’ve grown to be more confident in myself and strive to write my own characters to inspire people to be who they are and not what others want them to be.
