As a single mother and first-generation college student, education is more than a path to a degree—it is my doorway to a better future for myself and my daughter. My journey has shown me both the power of education and the challenges that still exist within it. Over the next ten years, I hope to see changes in education that make it more accessible, supportive, and practical for students like me who are balancing multiple responsibilities while striving for success.

The first change I hope to see is broader accessibility. As someone who is raising a daughter while pursuing my degree, I understand how difficult it can be to manage tuition costs, childcare, and coursework all at once. Education should not feel out of reach for anyone willing to put in the effort. Over the next decade, I hope to see increased scholarships, flexible online programs, and more affordable tuition so that students in every situation can pursue their goals without overwhelming financial strain.

Another change I hope to see is stronger support for mental health. I have personally experienced how stress, anxiety, and even depression can impact the ability to focus and perform academically. Seeking therapy and prioritizing my mental health has been essential for me to stay committed to my education. In the next ten years, I hope schools at every level provide more access to counseling, promote open conversations about mental health, and support students holistically—not just as learners, but as people.

Lastly, I hope to see education put a stronger emphasis on practical life skills. While academic knowledge is important, I believe students should also graduate with tools they can immediately apply to real life. Lessons in financial literacy, communication, and problem-solving would have a lifelong impact. For me, learning how to manage finances while raising a child and pursuing higher education has been one of the biggest challenges. If schools prepared students better in these areas, many of us could face adulthood with more confidence and stability.

In ten years, I hope education is not only more affordable and accessible, but also more compassionate and practical. For me, the pursuit of education has always been about more than myself—it is about showing my daughter what perseverance looks like and giving her an example of resilience. The changes I hope for would make education a true equalizer, empowering students from all walks of life to thrive. If those changes happen, the next generation—including my daughter—will not just learn facts and figures, but also how to live, grow, and lead with strength.
